Valentine's Date Night

As promised in my last post, here is my Valentine's date night outfit!  Valentine's Day has never been my favorite holiday because I believe in showing love every day of the year.  However, I do enjoy any excuse to get dressed up.  The dress I wore here is simple yet classy.  My feminine flower necklace and curled hair really dressed up the outfit.  I also wore this dress on Christmas Eve, but that was when it was about 70 degrees, so I was a little chillier when I took these photos!

My boyfriend, Dermot (pronounced like Kermit from the Muppets) and I do not have any set plans for Valentine's Day, but spending any time together would be nice!  We both have very busy schedules and do not see each other as often as we would like to, so a night in might be even more romantic than going out to a fancy restaurant.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, I took the 5 love languages quiz.  I took this quiz more than two years ago, and it was interesting to see what results changed and what stayed the same.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with the quiz, each question presents two choices of ways that you can show love to someone and you pick the one that is the most meaningful to you.  Here are my results:

10   Quality Time
   10   Acts of Service
    5    Physical Touch
               4    Words of Affirmation
     1     Receiving Gifts

The highest score you can receive in a category is 12.  I think that this quiz is very important because it helps you understand yourself and how you want to be loved.  You can take the quiz whether you are single or in a relationship.  There are no right or wrong answers to this quiz, it is purely your preferences!

For example, my cousin's highest "love language" is receiving gifts, while I only have a 1 in that category.  She feels loved when someone shows that they are thinking of her by giving her a gift.  This brings up an important point--you and your partner might have very different love languages.  We typically show love in the same way that we would like to receive it, but doing so isn't always the best choice.  Taking the love language quiz can help you figure out exactly how you would like to be loved so that you can communicate that to your partner.  Then make sure they take the quiz too so you know how to properly love them!

Dermot's score for words of affirmation was much higher than mine.  Knowing this, even though I would prefer someone doing something for me instead of saying something, I have to be mindful of what makes him feel valued and verbally express how much I love him.  Dermot also recently had to take a similar form of this quiz for his job.  I think that that shows how these principles can be applied beyond relationships; they can be extended to the workplace and friendships as well.  If you want to learn more about the love languages there is an entire book written about them, which can be found here.

Tickle Me Pink

This past weekend, Lauren and I went to the cutest bakery in downtown Harrisonburg called Herritage Bakery & Cafe.  It's the perfect type of place to go on a daytime V-Day date with your crush or your best gal pal.  This bakery has a lot of character.  They had old music playing including the likes of Frank Sinatra (which I'm sure blogger and JMU alum Summer Wind would appreciate) and unique antique dishes for guests dining in.  I love small businesses like this because they are what America is built on.  Not to mention this kind of place is a little more special than your run-of-the-mill Starbucks.  They also had great customer service and even warmed up the mini croissant for me!

My outfit here is put-together but not too fancy, which is perfect for this casual setting.  I wore the pale pink sweater to show my Valentine's spirit and the black pants so that this outfit could also transition into the nighttime.  (However, I will have a different Valentine's night look coming soon!)  My favorite part about this ensemble is my new bag from Old Navy.  The tassel adds a little sass, which we all need sometimes to spice up our lives.

Despite how much I loved the bakery, my favorite discovery was the sign outside of a church we walked by.  It displayed the reference to a verse in a chapter of the Bible that many people hear at weddings, "And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love.  But the greatest of these is love."  While many people get caught up worrying about flowers and chocolates, it is important to remember the true meaning of Valentine's Day is love.  The greatest gift we were ever given was the unconditional love from Jesus laying down his life for ours so that we could be saved and go to heaven.  "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends,"  John 15:13.  A different kind of love for you to ponder this Valentine's Day!  If you're interested in this check out this book, which focuses on how we can love the way Jesus loves.

Skating into the Semester

Once again, it has been a while since I have posted on the blog!  After my Back to School post, my classes seemed to pick up in full-swing.  Although I did have a short break with some snow days, (thanks, Jonas!) I have been very busy and missing my care-free Christmas vacation days.

These pictures were taken over winter break, which seems like a lifetime ago, very close to my house at Reston Town Center.  After ice skating, my sister, her friends, and I went to The Mellow Mushroom in Herndon.  Their pizza is delicious and about as good for you as pizza can get.  The first time I went to The Mellow Mushroom was in Tampa, FL when I was visiting family.  Besides the yummy food, it was the atmosphere that really caught my attention.  In Tampa, the restaurant has eclectic-hippie decor, whereas in Herndon, it has a more industrial theme.  When I went there with my sister and her friends after ice skating, it also happened to be trivia night!

This was a fun-filled day and one of the first times I used my new Canon camera, which I bought from a photography shop in Ashburn, Virginia.
